My notes about authenticity

  • As a Christ follower, my reality isn’t limited to my own ability, strength, or intelligence.
  • As a Christ follower, I have the right and the privilege of tapping into a much greater power. My reality is based on the fact that I am loved and empowered by the God of the universe and of my soul.

1 Peter 2:9 says, “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.”

John 15:5 says, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”

Romans 8:11 says, “And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.”

1 John 3:1-2 says, “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.”

Ephesians 1: 3-10 says, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.”

  • My own inability to keep it all together, cover every base, live up to expectations… this is my reality as a human living in an imperfect world, but is that truly ALL I am? I believe that it ‘s only part of the picture. As a Jesus follower, I am promised strength in my weakness, wisdom and direction for my path.

To me, authentic living is the daily decision to live this truth: Jesus died for me so I can have freedom from living only by my own resources. That doesn’t mean that my house is always immaculate and everything is nicely under (my) control; it does mean that I am learning to ask Him for wisdom in my priorities and help in my responsibilities. It means that I want to run this race with excellence – not covering imperfections and messes, but also not focusing on or glorifying them either.

  • I want to freedom dance without my socks sticking to the floor!

To my daughters:

My darlings, too often, pictures of messy, disorganized houses are now considered authentic living in today’s world. (Since when was a messy house something to be proud of?) We all deal with messes every single day, and they aren’t something to feel ashamed or afraid of. But why do we feel the need to show the world?

blank page template 8.5x10.5-1-6The amount of makeup we wear or don’t wear and the state of our house doesn’t decide the level of authenticity of our lives. As we like to say at our house, “What does that have to do to do with the price of eggs in China?” Nothing.

Girlies, being authentic is not about putting on a show and being accepted by other women, whether they are in the disastrous just-keepin-it-real group or the Pinterest-worthy staged-picture crowd. We are not in 7th grade trying to be in an “in crowd.” Authenticity is about living our lives in a way that glorifies God.

Keep your eyes of Jesus. Galatians 1:10, “Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.”

Something startling happened when I began praying that God would help me to priorities my responsibilities and live only to please Him.

  • God kept bringing me back to the fact that your dad/my husband, who is the epitome of generosity, helpfulness, kindness, and affection, appreciates a clean kitchen more than almost anything else in life.

(He works a full-time job away from home, plus a part-time job when needed. I homeschool and work part-time from home. Generally, we just pitch in and share the load on the home front.) However, I know that I can show this man how much I love and appreciate him by doing just a few things I know matter to him. As I was praying for God’s direction on priorities, I kept feeling a gentle nudging in my spirit about having a clean kitchen when he comes home after a long day at work. By doing this to serve him, I am serving the Lord.

blank page template 8.5x10.5-1-5To my friends and co-moms: If you have kids at home and you homeschool, you know what a challenge this clean kitchen thing is in real life! I literally pray that God will help me with my housework, including having a clean kitchen by 5 in the evening. I want to honor God by honoring my husband in this way. Sometimes one of my daughters will clean it up, but I usually go in and make sure it looks good. It’s amazing what just this simple decision has done! My girls have also decided that it is now a priority to make sure the vacuuming and sweeping are taken care of before their dad comes in. I didn’t realize this before, but my willingness to ask God to help me in this area has set an example for my daughters. Someday their husbands may appreciate a clean kitchen because of my willingness to obey and honor my husband.
