The year 2020 has brought many issues into sharp focus, as cultural injustices that have been hiding in plain view are now being scrutinized with magnifying glasses.
I feel that there is a great awakening happening, as millions of us, who, just last year glided through life with only an occasional sideways thought directed in the general direction of the monster hiding in the corner, are collectively standing to our feet in righteous indignation – rising together to fight the evil of the dark forces of the world.
I’ve caught myself wondering what my dad would say about the world events of 2020.
As far back as I can remember, my dad was always coming up with interesting sayings, poems, and expressions. My memory is full to overflowing with his grin and humor, and his passion for justice.
I share many personality characteristics and interests with my dad, including all things Irish and our love of reading and studying the writings of “old dead guys.”
When I recently stumbled across this Irish Franciscan blessing, I knew my dad would have loved it. I thought I would share it with you, as it speaks so poignantly to us today.
May God bless you with discomfort,
At easy answers, half-truths,
And superficial relationships
So that you may live
Deep within your heart.
May God bless you with anger
At injustice, oppression,
And exploitation of people,
So that you may work for
Justice, freedom and peace.
May God bless you with tears,
To shed for those who suffer pain,
Rejection, hunger and war,
So that you may reach out your hand
To comfort them and
To turn their pain to joy
And may God bless you
With enough foolishness
To believe that you can
Make a difference in the world,
So that you can do
What others claim cannot be done
To bring justice and kindness
To all our children and the poor.
