We, the Keepers of History

Many of us grew up despising history – or at least what was passed off as history! As the author of the heart-focused history curriculum, America’s Story and The World’s Story, Angela shares her heart and passion for teaching history in a fresh and relevant way for this generation of homeschooling parents and children. Angela’s motto is: if it’s boring, it’s not real history! The hundreds of thousands of families who tune into her immensely popular history podcast, Real Cool History for Kids (launched in July 2019), agree with her – there is nothing better than hearing amazing history stories told from a distinctly Biblical worldview perspective. Only by learning through this perspective can we understand our own true position and purpose for such a time as this.

But learning history is not all fun and games. As history marches forward, more and more libraries – public and private – are purging older, first-hand accounts of what are now considered to be antiquated and politically incorrect events throughout history. As an avid antique book collector (and rescuer), Angela has amassed an impressive library of hundreds of books dating back to the early years of our nation. Part of this session is a discussion about how we, as home educators, can and must take part in saving these accounts for future generations.

A few other topics covered in this workshop…

  • Why is it important to learn history from a Biblical worldview? Isn’t history just history?
  • When should I start teaching my kids history?
  • Do I have to teach history in chronological order?

What I wish I’d Been Told at the Beginning

This workshop is a must for all new homeschoolers…or for those wishing they could call a do-over! In this fun, encouraging, and upbeat workshop, Angela covers all of the major areas that she wishes she had known before starting her homeschooling journey twenty years ago. Come get the skinny on making your first year (or your re-start year) the best homeschool year ever.

A few of the topics covered in this workshop:

  • What to expect your first year of homeschooling
  • Tips for choosing curriculum for your unique family
  • Keeping your sanity – short term and long term
  • How to aim at moving targets
  • Q&A

Raising Calm Kids in an Overstimulating World

Please note, this workshop has a “teen edition” outlined below. If any event books Angela for this workshop, she will also do a TEEN edition session for FREE.

The importance of teaching our kids to de-stress in this overstimulating world is so extremely important. This is an interactive workshop, which addresses both the spiritual battle being waged on our children and the physical effects of the fast-paced, technological age we live in. This workshop is, in essence, a Biblical Life Coaching session, in which Angela pulls from her training as a child development specialist and family coach to address how stress leads to anxiety, which if not addressed, turns into depression. Come and learn about how we can take practical steps in learning how to deal with it ourselves so we can equip our children.

A few of the topics covered in this workshop:

  • The connection between our culture’s technological advances and adolescent depression, anxiety, and even suicide
  • Helping our children understand what tech is doing to their physical brains
  • Interactive discussion about building anchoring relationships
  • Exploring how our high-demands, fast-paced culture creates excess stress in our brains and what we can do about it
  • Tips and guidance for learning and teaching de-stressing techniques

When A + B Doesn’t Equal C

We all want our children to grow up to embrace our faith in God. This is, after all, one of the main reasons we homeschool. But what happens when our homeschooled child walks away from our families’ faith or never makes it their own? What must we parents do about it? Although this is not a fun topic to discuss or explore, the fact that we are losing a high number of our young people to the insidious pull of the secular culture demands we address it where it matters most: in our homes. In this workshop, Angela addresses the much-avoided topic of unexpected outcome: when A + B ≠ C. Pulling from personal experience and the testimony of numerous other parents who have walked the road of this kind of loss, Angela brings hope and truth concerning our prodigals, to the homeschool table. This session will encourage homeschooling families at every stage of their journey.

Courageous Identity – Mom Edition

This workshop can be used as a regular homeschool conference workshop session or as an evening women’s event session. Please note, there is a teen edition to this session. Information outlined below.

As homeschool moms, our lives are the most profoundly influential curriculum to which our children will ever be exposed. Scary thought? In all of her years of homeschool consulting and Christian Life Coaching, Angela has never spoken with a homeschooling mama who is secure in courageous identity or truly and genuinely completely confident in her ability to do all the things required of her in her parenting and homeschooling role. Not a single one.

Instead, what she hears is:

  • What if I ruin my kids?
  • What if I’m not doing enough.
  • What if they grow up and they can’t get into college or get a job?
  • What if they end up hating me?

In this session, Angela will infuse you with new hope that comes from these hard-learned TRUTHS:

  • What we are doing matters on an eternal level; therefore, the soil of our lives is Holy Ground.
  • This calling is holy, but because He doesn’t expect us to do this by ourselves, He requires us to come to Him to receive all we need.
  • You know that atmosphere of sympathy and understanding we want to create for our children? He wants to give it to us personally first. He wants to breathe life, comfort, peace, and joy into our being first, so we have it to give to our children.
  • He doesn’t expect us to conjure up the patience, love, peace, and joy you need for our families. Those are the fruit of the Holy Spirit that will flow through – not from – us to them, thus creating the atmosphere of comfort and peace we long for.

Rising Calm in our turbulent tech world

Please note, this workshop is the “teen edition” of the parent session “Raising Calm Kids in an Overstimulating World” outlined above. If any event books Angela for this workshop, she will also do a Parent edition session for FREE.

Courageous Identity – Teen Edition

This session can be presented in one 50-60 minute session, or if part of a teen tract/conference event, broken up into three, 45-50 minute sessions [outlined below].

“I am one of those chosen few who absolutely adores teens. I’ve never met one I don’t like. My ability to make connections with these youth is one of the most dearly cherished gifts of my life, and one of the ways I utilize it is through teaching and coaching. The very first interaction with teens, whether it is through my in-real-life classes or through technology, is always Courageous Identity Christian Life Coaching. This coaching helps the teens to establish their Biblical God-view through an investigation of Biblical Philosophy. We work through understanding and establishing an epistemological belief system, a metaphysical understanding, and finally, an ethical practice, all based on the Truth of God’s Word. By beginning with these three areas of understanding, we carefully establish the foundation for further explorations of how they play out in major cultural issues. This workshop session is a replica of this first class. Teens should come ready to learn and discuss!” Angela O’Dell

Teen Tract/Conference Courageous Identity Sessions
  • Session 1: From where does knowledge come? Who is God and what gives Him the right to call the shots?
  • Session 2: What is reality? Who am I in that picture?
  • Session 3: What is a good life? How do I interact with the world around me?

Anchored – Teen Edition

Our teens have been told practically since birth that Jesus loves them. When they were little, and their world was small and protected, they probably didn’t have a hard time believing this. But then life and pop culture became intruders into the once calm backdrop of their thoughts and reality. Now, in their teen years, is the time to deepen their understanding of the importance of that love. In this all-new workshop, Angela uses a hands on and interactive approach to illustrate and drive home the safety teens will find when they choose to be anchored to the One who loves them most. This “Anchored” workshop will give your teen a chance to develop a written “WHY?” statement for their faith and their relationship with God.

Learning to Win through the Tough Times – Teen Edition

You’ve probably heard the expressions “mistakes are better teachers than successes” and “what doesn’t kill you will make you stronger.” But how do failures actually teach us anything? Everyone experiences losses outside of their control, and we all make mistakes in life, but neither loss nor mistakes have the power to make or break us – it’s what we do with them that counts. Mistakes do not equal a lesson learned unless you learn how to “fail forward,” and losses don’t make you stronger unless you learn how to turn them into a win. This is resilience training at its best! This is perhaps one of the most strengthening and liberating session a teen could attend.

A few of the topics covered in this workshop:

  • What is your resilience level?
  • What is Holy Grit?
  • The power of reflection
  • Garbage in. Garbage out.
  • Stripping off the sin and running the race set before you.
  • Shutters on. Eyes on Jesus.
