February 2, 1848 – Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo Signed
The United States and Mexico signed a treaty ending the Mexican-American War. This treaty gave the U.S. a huge chunk of land, including California and much of the Southwest.
Fun Fact: The U.S. paid Mexico $15 million for this land—about $500 million in today’s money!
February 4, 1913 – Rosa Parks Born
Civil rights icon Rosa Parks, famous for refusing to give up her bus seat in Montgomery, Alabama, was born on this day. There are two episodes for Black History month. Part 1 and Part 2
Fun Fact: Her simple act of bravery helped change unfair laws!
February 6, 1865 – General Robert E. Lee
General Robert E. Lee is appointed General-in-Chief of the Confederate Armies during the US Civil War.
Fun fact: Robert E. Lee did not want to fight and did not like slavery, yet, he served as the Confederate’s general throughout the American Civil War. You can listen to his story here!
February 6, 1895 – Babe Ruth Born
Baseball legend Babe Ruth, one of the greatest home run hitters of all time, was born in Baltimore, Maryland. Listen to Episode 66: The History of Baseball
Fun Fact: Before becoming a baseball star, Babe Ruth was actually trained to be a tailor!
February 7, 2008 – NASA Sends “Across the Universe” Song into Space
NASA beamed the Beatles’ song Across the Universe into deep space to celebrate the band’s music and the agency’s 50th anniversary.
Fun Fact: Scientists aimed the song at the North Star, 431 light-years away—it’s still traveling through space! 🚀🎶
