Discussion Questions for After Podcast Episode 24

  • What is something that gave Clara great joy? (to teach and influence the young lives around her)
  • What were some of Clara’s first major accomplishments? (She became a teacher at 17 and started her own free school that served over 600 students!)
  • Why did Clara decide to open a free school? (She noticed the wealthy families were able to give their children a much better education than the poor families.)
  • Do you know what the American Red Cross is and what they do today? (In the time of Clara Barton, the American Red Cross helped to protect the war-wounded and civilians in conflict zones. Eventually The American National Red Cross expanded into a humanitarian group that gives emergency assistance, disaster relief, and teaches people how to prepare for disasters in the United States. This organization gives support and aid to thousands of areas that have disasters and emergencies every year.)
  • What was Clara Barton’s nickname?  (Angel of the Battlefield)
  • How many soldiers did Clara’s missing soldier organization locate? (Over 22,000!)
  • What were some jobs that women had in the Civil War? (Some fought, some were spies, and some acted as nurses.)
  • What clues did you hear as to why Rosetta Wakeman left the farm to go work and go into the military? (“She sent most of the money she made back to her family in New York” tells us she most likely wanted to help her family financially.)
  • How do we now know about Rosetta having disguised herself? (Many years after her death, letters about her time disguised as a man were discovered tucked away in the attic of the family farmhouse she grew up in.)

Don’t miss a thing…
